Outgrowing Diapers and Pull-Ups

Our little girl, whom I affectionately call Elly Belly, is not very little at all. She flew off the growth charts in weight at 3 months old when I was exclusively breastfeeding her. She remains an inch off the charts to this day. Her height isn’t far behind in the 95 percentile.

Having spent time searching the internet for answers on what to do when your child outgrows size 6 diapers and what to do when your child is gearing up to outgrow size 4t-5t in pull-ups, I thought it might be of some help to parents with chubby children if I compiled my findings here.

First and foremost, ignore the critics. The only person you need to listen to is your pediatrician. Odds are there is nothing wrong with your child.

A word about the diaper sizes:
Being a first time mom, I thought the weight range listed on the diapers were time-tested and accurate. Perhaps they are if you have a normal size child. If you have an Elly-sized child, take the weight recommendations with a grain of salt. Elly outgrew all the diaper sizes long before she reached the upper weight limit listed on the boxes.

So what does come after size 6 in diapers?
You have a few options:
1. Pampers does carry a size 7. We opted not to use them due to the overwhelming smell of baby powder.
2. You can switch over to pull-ups. I would recommend the Huggies training pants because they can tear open at the sides, which is a nice feature when your child is still having her bowel movements in diapers.
3. You can switch over to cloth diapers. I found Green Mountain Diapers to be a great resource when deciding which supplies to buy. Keep in mind that you need that same grain of salt for weight recommendations. Elly outgrew the cloth diaper covers listed up to 35 lbs when she tipped the scales at 30 lbs.

Now at 17 months, Elly is wearing pull-ups sized 4t-5t when out on the town with Daddy or when gardening with Mommy.

It’s the largest size carried by Pampers and Huggies. So what comes after pull-ups?
Again there are a few options.
1. In disposables, the next tier contains youth diapers, such as Attends Briefs.
2. Disposables offer another option: nighttime diapers. Pampers offers Underjams, diapers designed for children who haven’t mastered potty training at night. These go up to 65 lbs compared to 50 lbs with the pull-ups. But, who says they can only be used at night? Go ahead and use them during the day.
3. You can switch to cloth diapers. You’ll have a limited selection, since most AIO and pocket diapers will be too small or won’t allow room for growth. Elly is currently wearing toddler-sized pre-fold diapers with Bummis XL diaper covers. Both should continue to fit her in the coming months. However, we’ll have to switch to a different design when it’s time for potty training. I have my sights set on Happy Heinys Training Pants. They have a wide selection of sizes.
4. Switch to cloth, but use underwear. Mumtaz Soakers on Etsy offers both lined underwear, which is really for the child who is currently potty training, and nighttime waterproof underwear, which can be used during the day for the child who isn’t ready for potty training.

Of course, you could always hope that your child becomes potty trained before she outgrows the pull-ups. Unfortunately, our Elly has shown no signs of being ready for this step.

Keeping Elly Busy

On Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, Elly and I take Jake for a walk.

On Tuesdays, we play in the garden until about 9am. Then, we pack up and head to the playground and the Splash Park.

On Thursdays, we visit the Farmer’s Market where we pick up a week’s worth of fruits and veggies along with lunch for the day.

During the week, we visit our neighbors.

Though I do a pretty good job of keeping her busy, I often wish Elly, who is a social butterfly, had more occasions to meet other kids her age. Often when I take her to the playground, nobody is there.

Where do the other Moms in town take their kids?

I haven’t tried the mall. Maybe they are all at the mall. Pity it’s such a long bike ride away.

Elly is Feeling Better

Poor Elly started running a low-grade fever Friday night. On Saturday, she spent the vast majority of the day crying and complaining about being sick. Just when she started to recover from the fever, her eczema flared up causing her to itch like crazy.

The good news is that she is finally feeling like her old self again allotting me the time to resume my daily blog posts.

The bad news is that we’re pretty sure she is allergic to orange juice.

Another Growth Spurt

Elly recently shot up 2 inches. Most of her shirts had to be packed away because they could no longer cover her belly.

So, last Wednesday, Elly and I went shopping.

She needed more t-shirts, summer dresses, shorts and gardening pants. I found everything on my list at Evergreen Consignment shop in Pottstown.

I got all this for only $50.

If I had tried to buy this at a department store or boutique, I would have spent twice as much or more. With Elly growing at the rate she is, it doesn’t make sense to spend oodles on her clothes. She has to promise to wear her clothes for at least 1 year before I start buying her boutique clothing. With a little luck by the time she stops growing every few months, she’ll be old enough to sew her own boutique clothes.

Elly’s New Shoes

On Saturday, I took Elly shoe shopping for the first time.

I learned that my neighbor’s advice was right on the money: Payless Shoes has an excellent selection of kids shoes.

The first shoe I picked out for Elly to try on gave me a good idea of what not to get. She fussed over the snugness of the shoe. It was clear why when I took them back off; the straps had left red marks.

I needed a shoe that wasn’t too tight width-wise. Elly still has her baby fat on her feet … and elsewhere. Her feet are so fat they look swollen. ha!

I ended up buying her sandals in size 6-wide. The best thing about them is that I can just drop her foot into the sandal and then strap her in. The section over her toes is held together with velcro. Velcro is also used in the strap around her ankle. It’s so easy to put them on her. Plus they provide her a bit more protection than the moccasins she was wearing without slowing her down. I couldn’t be happier.

Elly seems pleased too. It’s like having toys on your feet. Who doesn’t love playing with velcro? Thankfully, she hasn’t figured out how to undo the ankle strap, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.

A Young Photographer

The vast majority of my picture shoots end with Elly standing in front of me vying for my camera.

Yesterday rather than put the camera away, I opted to sit Elly down and teach her how to push the button.

These were her first shots.

She clapped after taking each one.

Though she is still a bit young for it, I might have to buy her the VTech camera for Christmas.

Storing Baby Clothes

Elly is 14 months old. Despite promises from family, friends and even her pediatrician, she hasn’t thinned out or slowed down her growth. She remains tall for her age and adorably chubby.

Recently, I had to pack away all of her clothes labeled 24 months or smaller. Sizes 3T-4T fit her best now.

Though I typically store our off-season clothes along with Elly’s baby clothes from newborn to 12 months in plastic bins, Dan requested that I not store any more of her clothes that way. The bin was a bear to get up the narrow attic stairs. Dan suggested that I simply store them in trash bags.

The thought of black, unlabeled trash bags storing clothes made me twitch. Trash bags are for trash – not for storing outgrown clothes that will one day be handed down and most certainly not for organizing. Unwilling to take a stance on something trivial, I searched for a compromise and found these bags.

I love them!

I can see the contents at a glance. Additionally, I can write notes on the bag, such as the recommended age of the clothes.

Though Dan thought my objection of the trash bags was silly, he too was impressed with my find.

Organizing Photos by Date

I almost didn’t publish this post. It makes me sound anal retentive. I’m not really. I just love to organize.

Well, maybe sometimes I go overboard like when I organized all my buttons by color.

Or when I bought pin cushions for each type of pin I owned: metal, large and small.

It drives me nuts when things are out of order. Even though I had pictures of Elly in a cute pink photo album, I took them all out. I hated them not being in chronological order. Yeah, it sounds a bit crazy to me too.

It took an afternoon of sorting, but I’m thrilled with the results. Not only is it in order from birth to present day, but I even added little notes like when she played with her first toy and when she applied for her first passport.

Celebrating her Daddy’s birthday

Dan’s birthday is today, but we celebrated with cake yesterday.

It wasn’t just  any cake. Dan isn’t a fan of traditional cake and icing. He doesn’t like sweets in general, including chocolate. (This quirk of his is one of the keys to our happiness; he doesn’t raid my stash of chocolate).

Instead of a butter cake, I made him a cheesecake with a shortbread crust. (Neither I nor my neighbor had any graham crackers).

Elly, who is always thrilled to try to feed herself with a spoon, had a blast mashing the cheesecake, smearing it into her hair and getting the occasional mouthful.

Yum!
