Big Dipper

This scarf was designed especially for EtsyFAST’s August 2007 Challenge. The challenge to all EtsyFAST members was to create fiber art with a celestial theme. Thus, this scarf was born.

If you are new to beadwork, this is a great project to start with. Only 14 beads are used in the entire scarf. Each set of 7 beads represents the Big Dipper within the Ursa Major constellation. All beads are attached by the slipped stitch technique, which is considered the easier of the two well-known techniques.

The entire scarf is double knit. The end result is a scarf that is twice as thick as other scarves, making it a perfect gift for someone who has to endure any cold, bitter winters.

The knitting pattern will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to make the scarf pictured above. The instructions list the materials needed to complete the project along with the appropriate gauge. For your convenience, I have provided an abbreviated list of these materials below. The instructions then go on to detail how to knit the scarf step-by-step. Included within the written instructions are 2 knitting charts providing visual guidance on where to insert the beads.
