Recent Yard Sale Finds

Within the past 6 months, I have bought more furniture for this house than I have in the past 7 years. Most of our furniture has been well-loved hand-me-downs. So, it’s been so much fun adding more of our personality to this house.

My latest finds include a tea cart,

a chair to use with with my recently purchased secretary desk (the seat opens up to reveal storage)

and 2 porch chairs.

I’m still on the hunt for a new island. Though I love my island because it takes a kitchen lacking valuable counter space and turns it into a functional space that a chef would cut his left arm off for, I despise the grout in between the tiles.

(ignore the Rice Krispie treats … this picture was taken a year and half ago)

I can’t tell you the amount of flour that have been stuck in those grout lines over the years and how annoying it was to clean it all out. Truly, I’d love to buy the one from Williams Sonoma, but it’s out of my price range. So my hope is to find an old hutch or tall desk that I can place a slab of marble on top. No luck thus far. Why marble, you ask. Nothing is better for rolling pastries and breads out on. Besides, it’s classic and I love classic.

Introducing Baby Gertie

Last week on our way home from the Hickory Park pool, I pulled over to check out a yard sale. Boy was I glad I did.

I found the perfect table to sit in our living room next to our wing back chair. It was a steal at $2.

Elly made out even better. She found a new baby doll to love.

Truthfully, the doll won’t win any beauty pageants. But, her carriage could make even Cinderella green with envy.

Not only can Baby Gertie be wheeled throughout the house in it, but it is truly magical. It has two air hoses in it that can move Baby Gertie’s hands up and down when the carriage handle is squeezed.

We had named Baby Gertie right away. Elly is obsessed with learning everybody’s names these days. Later in the evening while looking the carriage over, I learned that it had a name: “Karen and her Magic Carriage”. I asked Elly if she wanted to call the baby Karen, since that was her given name.

“No, she is Baby Gertie” said Elly. And so she is.

Baby Gertie is not allowed out of the house. I don’t think I could replace her if she was lost or tossed out of the car window as we have already lost a toy and a set of CDs that way.

Curtains for the guest bedroom.

Long have I hated the old curtains, especially after I repainted the room in a cream color a few years ago. The old curtains were just too dark and too formal and so not me.

These curtains are a touch fancy what with all the embroidery, but for $2 I’m not complaining. They save me from having to sew yet more curtains for this house at a time when I want to focus on our party dresses.

I bought 3 panels, but have only hung 2; 1 per window. I figure I can use the 3rd panel to make pillows or to make a valance. In the meantime, I’ll add it to my stash. It’ll come in handy eventually.
